Step 0 Guidelines
Phase 1: Study Foundation
Identify Objectives
Define study purpose: project design, capacity development, monitoring, evaluation, or impact assessment. Establish key research questions and methodology.
Resource Planning
Define budget, assemble team, and scope support from organizations, consultants, enumerators, and research coordinators.
Phase 2: Stakeholder Engagement

Involve Stakeholders
Engage relevant parties for comprehensive understanding of agroecological context including social, economic, and environmental factors.

Diagnostic Phase
Understand context and key factors influencing agroecological transition through systematic assessment and validation.
Phase 3: Study Design & Sampling
Study Groups & Pre-typology
Identify pre-defined study groups such as beneficiaries vs. non-beneficiaries, geographical locations, and farm pre-typologies like small rice paddy farms or farm association members.
Sampling Strategy
Determine sample size and define sampling strategy using methods like multi-stage stratified random sampling for representative data collection.
Phase 4: Questionnaire Customization

Adapt Content
Customize questionnaire to project and local context requirements.

Translate
Translate into local language as needed for accessibility.

Digital Setup
Create Kobo/ODK account and test for technical issues.
Phase 5: Training & Pilot Testing
Preparation
Prepare supporting documentation and digital tools including tablets and Android phones for field work.
Training
Train enumerators with collective dry run of questionnaire to ensure proper understanding and execution.
Communication
Establish daily feedback channels between research coordinators and enumerators during data collection.
Phase 6: Survey Implementation
Informed Consent
Implement survey ensuring well-informed prior consent from all contributors including enumerators, respondents, and FAO on TAPE tool usage agreement.
Quality Monitoring
Monitor data collection regularly to ensure quality and address emerging challenges at both local and FAO levels as necessary.
Phase 7: Data Analysis & Visualization
Data Processing
Perform indicator calculations, data cleaning, and comprehensive statistical analysis including complex data modeling when necessary.
Visualization
Create data visualizations using R and Stata codes available on GitHub for indicator calculation and analysis.

Phase 8-9: Reporting & Validation

Draft Report
Prepare comprehensive report summarizing background, objectives, Step 0 contextualization, methods, and initial results for stakeholder review.

Participatory Analysis
Facilitate workshops with farmer representatives and stakeholders for validating and interpreting initial results through collaborative discussion.

Final Report
Finalize technical report, share with stakeholders, and decide concrete actions to improve farmer livelihoods and project intervention efficiency.
Phase 10: Policy Impact & Dissemination
Communication Materials
Develop policy briefs, 2-page reports, and presentations for policymaking stakeholders to facilitate evidence-based decision making.
Actionable Recommendations
Identify concrete recommendations based on generated evidence and stakeholder feedback for practical implementation.
Global Dissemination
Share data and results at local, national, regional, and global levels to inform evidence-based policymaking and agricultural transitions.
